Family-run park at the foot of Ben Nevis, minutes from the Mountain Track
Glen Nevis Caravan and Camping Park lies about two miles from Fort William along the glen road, directly beneath the west flank of Ben Nevis. The site has been run by the same family for generations and spreads across a series of level, well-drained fields between the river and the forestry, with the Mamores rising to the south. It is one of the largest campsites in the Highlands, with several hundred touring pitches, but the layout across separate meadows and the mature trees between them stop it feeling crowded.
Pitching options cover grass tent pitches with and without electric, hardstanding and fully serviced pitches for caravans and motorhomes, and a set of insulated camping pods for anyone who would rather not sleep on the ground. Facilities are kept to a high standard: heated shower and washroom blocks, a campers' kitchen, laundry, a motorhome service point, wifi, and a shop selling groceries, gas and camping basics. There is a play park for children and a restaurant and bar a short walk away at the Glen Nevis Inn.
The location is the reason most people come. The Ben Nevis Mountain Track starts at the visitor centre a few minutes' walk from the gate, and the walk up Glen Nevis to Steall Falls and the wire bridge is one of the finest short walks in Scotland. Fort William, the Jacobite steam train, the Nevis Range gondola and the road into Glencoe are all within easy reach. Expect around £31 a night for two people on a standard pitch, more for serviced hardstanding. The park usually opens from mid-March to the start of November and books up solidly for July and August, so reserve well ahead.
