A Georgian country house hotel in the village of Austwick, family-run, with a well-regarded restaurant and easy access to the Three Peaks.
The Traddock is a Georgian house on the edge of Austwick, a quiet village between Settle and Ingleton on the western side of the national park. It has been family-run for years and feels like it: open fires, worn rugs, dogs in the lounge and staff who know the walks. The gardens run down towards the fields and the limestone scars behind the village are visible from most windows.
There are around a dozen bedrooms, no two the same. Those in the main house are the more characterful, with high ceilings, antique furniture and in some cases free-standing baths; a few smaller rooms sit at the top of the house and are priced accordingly. It is worth reading the descriptions rather than booking blind, as size varies considerably.
The restaurant uses local suppliers and is open to non-residents, with a shorter bar menu at lunch and a fuller dinner list. Breakfast is generous and includes proper Yorkshire cured bacon and local eggs. There is no spa, no pool and no lift, which keeps the prices at a reasonable level for the standard of the house.
It suits walkers and couples above all. Austwick sits within easy reach of Ingleborough, the Norber erratics, Clapham and the show caves, and Settle station is around ten minutes by car for the Settle-Carlisle line. Families are welcomed and dogs are allowed in some rooms and the bar. Parking is on site and free, and the village pub is a two-minute walk if you fancy a change of scene.
