The Royal has stood above Ventnor since the town's Victorian heyday as a health resort, and it still feels like the grandest address on the island. It sits in its own gardens a short walk uphill from the esplanade, with views out across the bay from the front rooms and a sheltered position in the Undercliff that keeps the terrace usable well beyond high summer.
There are 52 bedrooms, a mix of traditional and more recently refurbished contemporary rooms, ranging from compact classic doubles to sea-view rooms and suites. Decor leans country-house rather than minimal — patterned fabrics, heavy curtains, proper armchairs. Front-facing rooms carry a premium and are worth it if you can get one; the garden-side rooms are quieter.
The hotel has held AA rosettes for its restaurant for a long stretch, and dinner is the main event, served in a formal dining room with a menu that leans on island produce and Channel seafood. Afternoon tea is taken in the bright conservatory. The heated outdoor pool opens for the warmer months and is a genuine draw for families, though the overall atmosphere is more sedate than child-focused.
It suits couples after a traditional, comfortable base with good food, and older visitors who want somewhere with lifts, parking and services rather than a boutique conversion. Ventnor's shops, small galleries and the Botanic Garden are all within walking distance, though the town's gradients are steep in every direction. Doubles typically start around £145, rising sharply for sea-view rooms in July and August.
