Hotels in Isle of Wight

The Isle of Wight is small enough that you can reach most of it from anywhere in under an hour, so choosing where to stay is less about logistics and more about what you want to walk out of the front door into. That said, the towns differ sharply in character, and a family looking for a beach five minutes from the room wants something quite different from a couple after a quiet dinner.

For families, Sandown and Shanklin are the obvious pick. Both have wide sandy beaches, seafront hotels with parking, and enough attractions within walking distance that a rainy afternoon does not derail the week. Expect straightforward, good-value seaside hotels rather than anything design-led, with high-season doubles typically from £90 to £140 a night.

Couples usually do better in Ventnor or Yarmouth. Ventnor has the island's most interesting food scene and a handful of small hotels with sea views, though the town is built on a hill and almost every walk involves a climb. Yarmouth is smaller and calmer, with a harbour, a couple of good pubs and quick access to the west coast. Prices in both run higher, roughly £130 to £220 for a double in season.

Cowes is the choice if you want bars, restaurants and boats. It is the busiest evening town on the island and a sensible base if you are arriving from Southampton without a car. Walkers tackling the coastal path often split their stay between two or three bases rather than driving back to one hotel each night — Freshwater, Ventnor and Ryde work well as staging points.

Book early for June, when the Isle of Wight Festival takes over, and for the first week of August during Cowes Week, when rooms in the north of the island effectively vanish and rates double. School summer holidays are busy throughout. Shoulder season in May, September and early October is far easier, with better rates and most places still open. Winter is cheapest but a good number of smaller hotels close entirely, so check directly before making plans.
