3 handpicked places to stay
Where you base yourself in the New Forest changes the holiday more than the hotel itself does. The park is compact — you can drive from Fordingbridge in the north to the Solent shore in around 35 minutes — but the character of each area is quite distinct, and the right choice depends on whether you want woodland from the doorstep, a proper high street, or the sea.
Brockenhurst is the default for good reason. It has the mainline station, so you can arrive from London without a car, and open forest starts within a couple of hundred metres of most of the village. It suits walkers, cyclists and anyone who wants ponies grazing outside the window. Lyndhurst is the most central for touring by car and has the widest spread of mid-range hotels and guest houses, though the village itself gets congested at peak times. Couples after restaurants, boats and a bit of evening life should look at Lymington, which is a coastal town rather than a forest village and prices accordingly.
Families often do better slightly out on the edges — around Fordingbridge, Ringwood or Milford on Sea — where prices soften and there is more space, at the cost of a short drive to the best walking. For a quiet, indulgent few days, the small villages of Beaulieu, Minstead, Emery Down and Fritham each have an inn or country house hotel with almost nothing else around them.
Expect to pay from around £100 a night for a decent double in a village guest house, £150 to £250 for the established four-star country house hotels, and considerably more at the top end. Prices rise sharply between May and September and over half-term weeks, and the best-known properties fill months in advance for summer weekends and the autumn colour period in October. Midweek stays in March, April or November are noticeably cheaper. Dog-friendly rooms are widely available but almost always need booking directly, and many hotels cap the number of dogs per property.
